CertainTeed Fence Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
CertainTeed fence installation in Orange County typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed, depending on linear footage, post replacement needs, and whether you’re matching existing CertainTeed panels or starting fresh. Most owners discover a failed section through one of three ways: a post that’s leaning after winter rains, a panel that cracked at the bottom rail, or a gate that suddenly won’t latch square. We stock CertainTeed-compatible Bufftech and EverNew post caps, rails, and pickets on the truck, so most repairs are done in a single visit.
What catches Orange County homeowners off guard is how sun and soil conspire against fence lines. The UV exposure in Irvine and Mission Viejo breaks down the surface of cheaper vinyl over 10 to 15 years, and the clay-heavy soil in places like Yorba Linda and Orange holds water against post bases long after the rain stops, which is why post rot and lean are the first failures we see. CertainTeed’s thicker wall profile on their Bufftech line resists that sun damage better than box-store vinyl, but the installation still has to account for drainage, or you’re just buying time.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s fencing falls under two residential lines: Bufftech and EverNew. Bufftech is the workhorse: a routed, tongue-and-groove vinyl panel that comes in Standard, SimTek, and CertaGrain textures. EverNew is the cellular PVC trim and panel line, typically used for privacy screens and decorative accents. The broad majority of Southern California installations are Bufftech. The dark brown and tan colorways age better in our sun than white, but that’s a separate conversation.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Bufftech panels are engineered as a system. The bottom rail on a Bufftech panel is wider than the top rail, and the pickets are individually routed into both. You can’t just swap a single broken picket with an aftermarket panel from another manufacturer and expect the rail to sit flush. If you don’t have a part number, flip a panel over and look at the inside bottom rail. CertainTeed stamps a manufacture code there, usually starting with a “CT” prefix. We use that code to match the exact series; the CertaGrain finish is textured and takes a different cleaning routine than smooth Standard series, so we want to match both color and texture, not just color.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: we install CertainTeed OEM parts almost exclusively. Aftermarket vinyl fence sections are thinner, usually 0.060 to 0.080 inch wall thickness, versus CertainTeed’s 0.100 inch or better on the Bufftech line. For Orange County’s wind gusts through the canyons, that wall thickness difference is what keeps a panel from flapping itself loose. Aftermarket caps sit looser too; the OEM cap has a snap-in channel that aftermarket caps just don’t replicate.
Penhallow Remodeling Orange County is an independent contractor, not a CertainTeed dealer or affiliate. That matters because we tell you what we’re installing and what it costs without a manufacturer angle. The parts are genuine CertainTeed, but the pricing and the warranty come from us.

Signs Your CertainTeed Fence Installation Is Failing
- A post that leans more than five degrees. In Orange County’s clay soil, the culprit is usually standing water at the post base. The post wasn’t set with gravel drainage, or the concrete footing was poured too shallow. The post will continue to lean and eventually crack the rails on both sides.
- A panel that cracks at the bottom rail. Surface water splashing up from sprinklers or a hardscape edge puts constant stress on the lower rail. Once one panel goes, the neighboring panels start taking more lateral load. Replacing one usually becomes replacing three.
- A gate that won’t stay latched. The frame is sagging, which usually means the hinges have worn their screw holes or the gate post wasn’t set with enough concrete. Tightening the screws is a two-week fix at best. The real fix is a new post set to the right depth.
- Warping or bowing in panel sections. This is UV degradation. The vinyl has lost its internal flexibility and is now pulling away from the rails. Bufftech panels in your exposure should hold 15 to 20 years before this happens; if it’s happening at year 8, the panels weren’t installed with enough expansion clearance at the post notches.
- Chalky residue on your hands after touching the fence. That’s the surface layer breaking down. It’s not a structural failure yet, but it means the panels are in their last few years. You’ll want to budget for replacement before the structural failure starts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

We quote CertainTeed fence installation on a per-linear-foot basis, and in Orange County that typically lands between $65 and $95 per linear foot installed, with full replacements falling in the $3,500 to $9,000 range for a standard suburban lot. A single failed section with one post replacement and two panels runs $850 to $1,500. The range depends on three things: how many posts need to be reset, whether the existing panels can be reused, and the access to the fence line. If we have to hand-carry panels through a side yard in Newport’s bluff-top neighborhoods, that’s slower and the number reflects it.
What’s included in our number: the CertainTeed OEM panels, posts, rails, and caps; demolition and haul-away of the failed section; concrete footings set to Orange County code depth; and a written line-item price before we start. What’s not included: leaving old concrete footings in place, which some installers do and then pass off as fine. We don’t bury old footings; they come out.
Every fence installation from Penhallow Remodeling Orange County carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If a post shifts, a gate sags, or a panel cracks inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee, no back-and-forth. That’s the same standard we apply to our kitchen and bathroom work, and we don’t lower it just because it’s a fence.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can safely do before you call. You can check whether the post is actually loose or just looks loose: push on it at shoulder height. If it moves at the top but not the base, the post is fine and the rails need repositioning. You can also record the CT code on the inside bottom rail, so we can match the exact series before we arrive.
What I wouldn’t attempt: setting a new post in clay soil without the right drainage is how you end up back in the same spot in two years. A 9-foot steel post driven into compacted Orange County clay with a lump of Quikrete poured around it is not a footing; it’s a placeholder. If the post fails, the panels on both sides start loading unevenly, and panels crack at the rails. You can check the code and test the post. Let us handle the footer and the panel match. Call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing.
FAQs

A properly installed CertainTeed Bufftech fence should last 20 to 25 years in Orange County’s climate, with surface fading starting around year 12 to 15. The failure point is almost never the vinyl itself; it’s the post footings and the drainage around them. Get the footings right and the fence outlasts many of the surrounding hardscapes.
A cracked panel needs replacement. Vinyl doesn’t structurally bond back together with adhesives; any attempt to “glue” a cracked rail or picket fails within months because the expansion and contraction of the material pulls the joint apart. For a small crack at the bottom corner of a panel, sometimes a rail cap can carry the load for a season, but the panel is done. Call (424) 541-1701 for a straight answer on whether yours is salvageable.
A standard two-panel section with one post replacement is a single-day job for us. Most CertainTeed section replacements in Orange County take between 4 and 6 hours from start to cleanup. Full fence replacements on a standard 150-foot suburban lot run 2 to 3 days, including demo and haul-away.
We stock Bufftech Standard and CertaGrain panels, rails, post caps, and posts on our truck in white, tan, and brown. For EverNew trim and SimTek finishes, we order from our Orange County supplier with a 2 to 4 day lead. If you can read us the CT code off the inside rail before we arrive, we’ll show up with the right part the first time, not a guess. Call (424) 541-1701 and read it off to us.
If you’re in Orange County and have a CertainTeed fence that’s starting to lean, crack, or sag, call (424) 541-1701 for a free estimate. You’ll get a written number before any work starts, and a written guarantee that covers the work for a year after we’re done. Give you the number first, then pick up the tool.
