IKO Roofing: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

If you own a home in Orange County with an IKO roof, you’re likely here because something’s failed: a shingle tore loose in a Santa Ana wind, granule loss has your gutters full of grit, or you’ve spotted a leak after a winter storm off the Pacific. We stock and install IKO-compatible roofing materials throughout Orange County, with typical roof repairs running $400 – $1,800 and full replacements $8,000 – $20,000 depending on roof size, pitch, and the IKO line your home currently wears. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a dark spot on the ceiling, shingle tabs in the yard after high wind, or an insurance inspector flagging granule loss on a 15-year-old roof.

Before you spend another night worrying about it, here’s what we tell every Orange County homeowner with an IKO roof: the fix is usually straightforward once the shingle line and exposure are matched correctly. IKO makes several distinct product families, and the wrong replacement shingle won’t just look off, it can create a channel for water where the old and new don’t seat together. We’ve matched IKO roofs in Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, and older Irvine neighborhoods for years, and the process is methodical once you know what to look for.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s residential lines break into a few families you’ll see across Orange County rooftops. The Cambridge series is the most common: a laminated architectural shingle with a distinctive shadow line, usually in a 36-inch width with a 5-5/8-inch exposure. The Dynasty line is heavier, with a larger exposure and a deeper dimensional profile. Older homes, particularly from the 1990s and early 2000s, often carry Marathon or Aristocrat three-tab shingles, which IKO has largely phased out in favor of architectural lines. There’s also the Nordic performance line, which we see more in the foothill communities where homeowners want extra impact and wind resistance.

The compatibility gotcha most Orange County homeowners hit: Cambridge and Dynasty are not interchangeable on the same roof plane. They have different thicknesses and exposures, so mixing them mid-slope creates an uneven surface that catches water. If your IKO roof is over 20 years old, you may find the exact color has been discontinued, which means either matching the nearest current color or planning a partial re-roof on the affected slope. We can pull a shingle and check the nail line and exposure on site, but a clear photo of your shingle’s edge and a measurement of the exposure from the ridge usually tells us which line you have before we even climb the ladder.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for IKO specifically: IKO’s own shingles carry a limited warranty, but that warranty is prorated after the first few years and doesn’t cover labor. Aftermarket alternatives from GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed are easier to source in Orange County, but they won’t match an IKO color perfectly. For repairs, we recommend staying within IKO’s current color lineup when possible. For a full replacement, we’ll give you numbers for either path so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Signs Your IKO Roofing Is Failing

  • Granule loss collecting in gutters or at downspout bases. This is the number one early warning we see on aging IKO roofs in Orange County. The ceramic granules protect the asphalt from UV, and once they start shedding in volume, the shingle substrate bakes in the Southern California sun and cracks within a season or two. If your gutters look like they’re full of coarse black sand, the roof’s protective layer is leaving.
  • Curling or cupping shingle tabs, especially on south-facing slopes. IKO’s architectural shingles hold up well to heat, but 15-plus years of Orange County sun eventually dries the asphalt. Tabs start lifting at the corners first. Once they curl high enough to catch wind, a Santa Ana event will strip them off entirely. This is the most common repair call we get between October and January.
  • Missing shingle tabs after wind events. You’ll usually find them in the yard or on a patio cover the morning after. One or two missing tabs is a $400 – $600 repair. Dozens suggests the whole slope has lost its adhesive seal and the roof is entering replacement territory. We tell Irvine and Tustin homeowners the same thing: if you’re picking up more than ten tabs, get the whole slope evaluated.
  • Dark streaks, moss, or lifted sections near roof valleys and chimney flashings. Water doesn’t need a hole to cause damage. A broken seal at a valley or a rusted chimney flashing lets moisture wick under the shingle, saturating the decking below. By the time you see a ceiling stain, the leak has usually been working for months. The shingle is often fine; the flashing detail is the failure point.
  • Visible cracking or blistering on shingle faces. This shows up most on low-slope sections and near vents. Blisters pop when trapped moisture under the shingle surface expands in heat, leaving pinholes that widen into cracks. It’s not always a full-roof problem, but it’s a slope-by-slope repair that gets worse with every summer. The good news: Orange County’s mild winters mean this damage doesn’t accelerate as fast as it does in freeze-thaw climates.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A dining nook with a built-in banquette

In Orange County, IKO-compatible roof repairs run $400 – $1,800 for most single-slope fixes, and a full IKO roof replacement lands between $8,000 and $20,000. The spread comes from three factors: roof size and pitch (a two-story tile-adjacent home in Mission Viejo with a steep pitch costs more in labor than a single-story ranch in Fountain Valley); the IKO line you choose (Dynasty runs about 15 – 20% more than Cambridge per square); and what’s underneath (if the decking has water damage, we’ll price the sheathing replacement before you’re committed to anything).

Every number we give you is a written price before any work starts, parts and labor included. You’ll see the shingle cost, the underlayment, the flashing, the labor, and the haul-away as separate lines on the invoice. If the price changes, you approve it in writing first. Our work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if your IKO roofing repair fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge, including a free second visit if the original fix doesn’t hold. The number you’re given on day one is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Climbing onto an Orange County roof is where DIY goes wrong. Tile and composition roofs out here are dusty, steep, and unforgiving on a warm afternoon. What we tell homeowners is this: you can safely do the ground-level inspection. Check your gutters for granule buildup. Look up from the curb or a neighbor’s yard with binoculars and photograph anything that looks curled, missing, or cracked. Mark those photos with a date and check again after the next wind event.

What you shouldn’t do is ladder up with a bundle of shingles and a nail gun. Roof repairs that fail don’t fail quietly; they leak into your ceiling and cost double what the original fix would have. If you’re seeing active water intrusion, call us at (424) 541-1701 and we’ll walk you through what to do until we can get there. Give you the number first, then pick up the tool, that’s how we work. The estimate is free, and the answer comes from someone who’s climbed more Orange County roofs than we can count.
