Unilock Driveway & Pavers: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
If you have a Unilock paver driveway, walkway, or patio in Orange County and part of it is sinking, cracking, or separating at the edges, you’re likely looking at a base failure or a broken paver unit, not a product defect. A full Unilock paver driveway replacement here runs $7,000 – $18,000 installed, and smaller repairs usually land in the $800 – $3,500 range depending on square footage and how much base material needs rebuilding. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: a paver starts rocking underfoot, a low spot collects water after rain, or the sand between joints washes out faster than it should.
We stock Unilock-compatible pavers, edge restraints, joint sand, and base materials, and we can usually match an existing Unilock color and series within a day or two of seeing the job. Trevor Nash has been looking at paver failures across Orange County long enough to know that what looks like a “bad paver” is almost always a base layer that was cut short by the original installer.
Which Unilock Models This Applies To

We work with the full Unilock paver and wall lineup that’s common in Orange County: Brussels Block, Courtstone, Mattoni, Hollandstone, Town Hall, Richcliff, and Thornbury are the series we see most often in driveways and patios from Irvine to Mission Viejo. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: Unilock pavers are sold in multiple thicknesses (60mm for pool decks and walkways, 80mm for driveways), and a 60mm paver installed on a driveway base will crack under vehicle weight every single time. If your driveway pavers are cracking in a defined pattern, that thickness mismatch is the first thing we check.
Matching an existing paver means reading the series name off the underside of a lifted unit or matching the top texture and chamfer to a current Unilock catalog. OEM Unilock pavers are the same concrete mix in every batch, so color-matching a 10-year-old installation usually requires ordering from the same series and accepting minor fade variance from sun exposure. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist and cost 15 – 25% less, but on a visible driveway, that color and texture difference shows. For driveway repairs, we recommend OEM Unilock. For side-yard or rear patio repairs where color matching matters less, a quality aftermarket unit in the same dimensions works fine.

Signs Your Unilock Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- A paver or cluster of pavers rocks when you step on it. This means the sand bedding layer has eroded or compacted unevenly. It’s an early warning, not the failure itself, but if left alone, the rocking pavers will chip at the edges and the surrounding pattern starts shifting.
- Low spots that hold water after rain. In Orange County’s clay-heavy soils, especially in older Irvine neighborhoods, a base layer that wasn’t compacted in lifts will settle unevenly and create birdbath puddles. Standing water on a paver driveway accelerates joint sand washout and freeze-spalling on the surface, even here where freezes are rare.
- Edge pavers pulling away from the border or curb. Missing or failed edge restraint lets the outside pavers drift outward, which creates widening gaps and a wavy border line. This is one of the most common failures we repair, and it’s usually fixable without replacing the whole driveway.
- Sand accumulating on the driveway surface or washing into the gutter after rain. Polymeric joint sand has a lifespan, and once it starts breaking down, pavers lose lateral support. Joints open up, weeds sprout, and the whole mat starts moving.
- Cracked or chipped pavers in wheel-tracks. A 60mm paver on a driveway or a base with insufficient crushed aggregate under the wheel paths will crack in straight lines following the tire tracks. This isn’t cosmetic; it’s structural, and it will keep happening until the thickness or the base is corrected.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Unilock paver driveway replacement in Orange County typically runs $7,000 – $18,000 installed. The range is driven by driveway size, paver series, whether we’re pulling out old concrete or old pavers, and how much base material needs to be hauled in. For a standard two-car driveway around 600 – 800 square feet in Midrange Unilock series like Brussels Block or Courtstone, expect $9,000 – $14,000.
Smaller repairs like edge restraint replacement, spot base repair, or paver matching for a 30 – 60 square foot section run $800 – $3,500, with the low end covering edge rebuilds and the high end covering paver pull-and-reset with base correction. Every quote is a written line-item price before we start: pavers, base material, joint sand, edge restraint, and labor all listed separately. No allowances, no “we’ll see what we find” markup. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the repair in writing: if the same section fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things yourself before calling anyone. First, look at the border: if the edge pavers are drifting or the edge restraint is visible, that’s your diagnosis. Second, lift one paver and check its thickness; on a driveway, if it reads 60mm stamped on the bottom, plan on a base and paver correction. Third, check where water pools after the next rain.
What you shouldn’t DIY is lifting and resetting an entire section of a driveway. The base under a failed paver mat is usually compromised too, and resetting pavers on bad base gives you the same failure again in a year. The repair also involves compacting aggregate in lifts, and doing that wrong under a driveway means redoing the whole job. If the edges are gone or the wheel tracks are cracked, call us at (424) 541-1701. We’ll give you the number first, then pick up the tool.
FAQs

Unilock pavers themselves can last 20 – 30 years or more in Orange County’s climate; what fails first is almost always the base or the joint sand, usually around year 10 – 15, especially on driveways built over clay soil or with a thin base layer. A properly built paver driveway here should give you 25+ years before any significant repair. If yours is failing in under a decade, the odds are high the original base was undersized or the wrong paver thickness was used for the application.
Yes, if the failure is localized to one area and the surrounding base is still stable, we can cut out the affected section, rebuild the base under it, and reset the pavers with matching units and new joint sand. If the edge restraints have failed across the whole driveway or the base is settling unevenly everywhere, a full replacement costs less in the long run than chasing repairs one section at a time. We’ll tell you which one applies to your driveway, and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts. Call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll schedule a time to look.
A localized edge or spot repair usually takes one day on site. A full driveway replacement typically runs three to five working days from demo through compaction, paver laying, cutting, and joint sand, depending on size and access. We keep you posted on the timeline in writing before we start, and the crew arrives in uniform at the window we gave you.
We source pavers directly from Unilock and from local Orange County masonry supply yards, and we handle the ordering, delivery, and matching. You don’t need to buy anything yourself. We’ll confirm the series, thickness, and color match during the estimate, and the paver cost is listed as a line item in your written quote. Call (424) 541-1701 for a free estimate and we’ll get the ball rolling.
