Cover Fence Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

Cover fence installation in Orange County typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full replacement or new run, with most jobs completed within two to three days once material is on site. If you’ve got a Cover product and a section of fence has failed, the most common call we get starts the same way: a gate drags, a post leans after rain, or a panel cracked at the base after a Santa Ana wind event. We’re Penhallow Remodeling Orange County, an independent contractor not affiliated with Cover, and we install, match, and repair Cover-style fence systems across the county. Trevor Nash grew up on the San Gabriel Valley side of Los Angeles and has seen more Orange County fence failures from irrigation overspray and clay soil expansion than from actual material defects.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover fence systems in Orange County fall into two broad categories: the original board-on-board privacy line and the newer horizontal-slat series. The board-on-board version uses overlapping vertical pickets, typically 5/8″ thick cedar or composite, with a 1×4 or 2×4 top cap and mid-rail. The horizontal-slat series spaces 1×6 or 1×8 slats across 4×4 or 6×6 posts. Before we buy or match anything, we check two things: the post spacing (Cover systems run either 6-foot or 8-foot centers) and the rail-to-post bracket style. Cover’s proprietary corner brackets and mid-rail hangers are not cross-compatible between the two series, which catches a lot of Orange County homeowners off guard. If your fence was installed before 2018, the brackets on the original line are no longer sold by most supply houses, and we’ll match an aftermarket equivalent made from coated steel rather than the original powder-coated aluminum. If it was installed after 2018, OEM parts are easier to source, but the aftermarket equivalents often outlast them in coastal salt air. Irvine’s older neighborhoods near the Spectrum, where 1980s and 90s builds dominate, tend to have the pre-2018 hardware almost universally.

Signs Your Cover Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Leaning post at the gate hinge side. This is the most common Orange County failure. Clay soil in Fullerton and Yorba Linda expands and contracts with moisture, and the post twists in the footing over two or three wet winters. The gate sags, the latch misses, and the post eventually pulls the rail brackets loose.
  • Rail splitting at the bracket fasteners. Cover’s original series used zinc-coated screws into end-grain. In dry inland heat, the wood shrinks and the screws lose bite. You’ll see hairline cracks radiating from the screw heads before the rail actually drops.
  • Bottom of pickets turning dark or soft. Irrigation overspray is brutal on cedar and composite alike in Orange County. If your sprinkler heads hit the same section of fence twice a day, the bottom 6 inches will rot or delaminate years before the rest of the fence shows wear.
  • Top cap lifting at the splice points. Cover’s top cap runs in 8-foot sections with butt joints. In direct sun exposure on south-facing fences, the cap expands and pushes at the joints, and the fasteners lose tension. You’ll see a slight see-saw gap open and close with the season.
  • Post cap cracking or missing entirely. The plastic post caps on the board-on-board series are injection-molded and degrade under UV. Once the cap cracks, water goes straight down the post end-grain. In Orange County’s dry season, that seems cosmetic; by January, the post top is punky and the rail screws have nothing left to grab.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Cover fence installation in Orange County runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed. The low end covers a partial panel replacement: two or three posts, matching pickets, and new brackets, usually 30 to 50 linear feet. The high end covers a full fence run with new posts, all brackets, top cap, and gate hardware, typically 100 to 150 linear feet. What moves the number: post condition (setting new posts in concrete adds roughly $85 per post for material, digging, and haul-off), the fence series (the horizontal slat line runs 15 to 20% higher on material than board-on-board), and whether the old concrete footings have to be broken out or can be cut at grade. Every job gets a written price before we start, not an estimate range, and a written line-item breakdown of parts and labor. The Kingswell Way isn’t a slogan we kick around; it’s a written number, a defined arrival window, and a 365-day promise to make it right if anything fails. We install it through Penhallow Remodeling Orange County, which is independently owned and operated as part of the Kingswell family of companies.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: whether the post is moving in the footing by pushing on it, whether the bracket screws spin free with a hand driver, and whether sprinklers are hitting the bottom rail. What you shouldn’t do is set a fence post with an exit gate on it without accounting for the hinge load. Most DIY Orange County jobs we follow up on have the same two problems: the concrete footing is undersized (minimum 10 inches in diameter and 24 inches deep for a gate post in this county’s clay soil), and the post was not shimmed plumb before the concrete set. Both are $700 mistakes to fix after the fact. Fence panels themselves aren’t dangerous to handle, but a 6-foot-by-8-foot board-on-board panel in a Santa Ana gust is a sail, not a board. If the panel is bound at the rails, call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll match the hardware and have a background-checked, uniformed technician out with a written number before any work starts. Give you the number first, then pick up the tool.
