Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Ameristar-compatible paver and driveway parts across Orange County, with most paver driveway installations running $7,000 – $18,000 and driveway replacements typically $5,000 – $14,000, fully installed. Most homeowners call us after finding a sunken paver run, a cracked edge restraint, or a section of the driveway that’s started to separate from the base after a heavy rain season. The part itself is rarely the expensive part of the job – what you’re really paying for is the substrate work underneath, which is exactly where cheaper installations fail first.
Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar manufactured paver lines under a few different series names over the years, and the compatibility question usually comes down to the paver’s dimensional profile rather than a printed model number. The most common Ameristar pavers we encounter in Orange County driveways are the 60mm and 80mm interlocking concrete units, and those two thicknesses do not interchange – an 80mm paver sits proud of a 60mm field, and no amount of sand leveling fixes that. If you can still read the paver stamp on the underside, the thickness is usually printed right there. If the stamp is gone, measure the paver’s height at the edge; that’s the number we need before we quote.
For the OEM versus aftermarket decision: Ameristar no longer produces every paver line it once sold, so a true OEM match isn’t always available. When it isn’t, we source a quality aftermarket paver that matches the original’s dimensions, surface texture, and color tone as closely as the 30-year-old driveway will allow. New pavers next to weathered ones will always show their age difference for the first season or two, no matter what you buy. We’re upfront about that.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken paver runs that hold water after rain: This is a base failure, not a paver failure. The original installer likely didn’t compact the subgrade properly, and the pavers are telegraphing that mistake years later. Orange County’s clay-heavy soils in places like Tustin and Fullerton make this more common than coastal homeowners expect.
- Edge pavers shifting outward under tire load: The edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Without a solid edge, the entire field of pavers slowly migrates toward the lawn or planter bed. This is usually the first visible symptom on driveways over 15 years old.
- Cracks through individual pavers, not along the joints: A single cracked paver usually means a point load problem – a heavy vehicle parked in the same spot, or a low spot in the base that lets the paver flex. If you’re seeing multiple cracked pavers in a line, the base below has failed and the repair is structural, not cosmetic.
- Sand washing out of the joints after every rain: Joint sand should stay put. When it doesn’t, water is moving under the pavers instead of off the surface, which means the slope or the drainage plan was wrong from the start. Left alone, this leads to the sinking described above.
- Weeds or grass pushing up through joints in a home built in the 1980s or 90s: The original landscape fabric is long gone. We see this constantly in Irvine’s older neighborhoods near the Spectrum, where Trevor Nash and our crews have worked on plenty of 80s-era driveways that were never re-sanded after the fabric broke down.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Paver driveway installation in Orange County runs $7,000 – $18,000, and a full driveway replacement lands between $5,000 and $14,000. The spread is driven by square footage, access for equipment, whether we’re reusing any existing base material, and how much of the old driveway has to be hauled off. A partial repair – say, re-setting a 200-square-foot sunken section and replacing the edge restraint – typically starts around $1,500 but varies with depth of excavation and paver type. Every quote we give is written, line-item, and priced before work starts: the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. If any part of that repair fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge, in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely dig out and save the pavers from a small failed section, and you can re-sand poly joints yourself if you’re patient with a broom and compactor rental. What you should not do is attempt to re-compact a failed base or re-grade the slope without the right equipment and a way to haul excavated clay away. The danger here isn’t springs or wiring – it’s that a poorly compacted base fails again within two years, and now you’ve paid twice. Give you the number first, then pick up the tool: that’s how we work, and it’s the reason homeowners call us before they start digging. Call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a weekend fix or a crew-and-a-compactor job.
FAQs

A properly installed Ameristar paver driveway lasts 25 – 40 years in Orange County, with the pavers themselves rarely being the failure point – the base and edge restraint fail long before the concrete units do. UV exposure fades the surface color after 10 – 15 years, but structural life depends almost entirely on subgrade preparation and drainage. Call (424) 541-1701 for a free estimate on any paver repair, and we’ll assess your base as part of the quote.
Yes, most paver driveways can be repaired sectionally – re-setting sunken pavers, recompacting failed base areas, and installing new edge restraints costs far less than a full replacement when the damage is localized. The catch is that a base failure under a large section of the driveway usually means the original prep was inadequate, and patching just the visible damage may buy you a few years rather than a permanent fix. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before you spend a dollar.
A sectional repair – re-setting up to 200 square feet of pavers with new base and edge restraint – typically takes 1 – 2 days with our crew. A full paver driveway replacement in Orange County usually runs 3 – 5 days depending on access, demo volume, and weather, and we schedule a defined arrival window so you know when our uniformed, background-checked technicians will be on site.
We stock the most common Ameristar-compatible paver profiles, including 60mm and 80mm interlocking concrete units, and our suppliers can source obscure or discontinued Ameristar lines within a few days when a true OEM match is still available. We occasionally use quality aftermarket equivalents when Ameristar no longer produces the original profile, and we always show you the paver before installation. We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone products, because a lot of Orange County homes have all four brands under one roof.
