CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling: The Orange County Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a kitchen remodel in Orange County and want CertainTeed materials specified or matched, we install and coordinate CertainTeed-compatible kitchen remodels starting at $14,000, with most full kitchen renovations in Orange County landing between $18,000 and $45,000 depending on layout, cabinet line, and countertop material. We’re an independent Orange County general contractor, not a CertainTeed dealer, which means we can pair CertainTeed products where they make sense and bring in complementary brands where they don’t. Most Orange County homeowners reach out to us after a previous remodel failed, or after a contractor quoted CertainTeed materials and delivered something else entirely.
The most common scenario we see: someone had a kitchen remodel done five or ten years ago, the contractor used CertainTeed drywall or CertainTeed siding on an exterior kitchen wall, and now there’s water staining, cracking at the seams, or substrate failure behind the tile. Or the homeowner is mid-planning and wants to know if CertainTeed products are worth specifying by name. Either way, we’ll tell you honestly what holds up in Orange County’s coastal humidity and inland heat, and what doesn’t.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

In kitchen remodeling, CertainTeed materials typically show up in three places: CertainTeed gypsum wallboard (specifically the M2Tech moisture-and-mold-resistant board), CertainTeed insulation (mostly the Sustainable Insulation fiberglass batts), and certain CertainTeed siding products when the kitchen is on an exterior wall. The compatibility question matters most with M2Tech board. That board is engineered for high-humidity zones, and it’s the product we specify behind tile backsplashes and around sinks in Orange County kitchens where coastal moisture pushes through walls.
Here’s a spec gotcha most homeowners never hear about: CertainTeed M2Tech board is not the same as standard purple or green drywall. It’s denser, it scores differently, and if a crew installs it like standard board, you’ll get cracking at the seams within two years. We’ve corrected that exact problem in Irvine kitchens where 1980s and 90s builds were updated quickly with whatever board was on the truck. The difference between OEM-specified CertainTeed board and a generic moisture board matters more than most contractors admit.
If you’re unsure what’s behind your current kitchen walls, we can do a small inspection cut during a free estimate. We’ll tell you the make, the thickness, and whether it’s doing its job. No charge for the visit.

Signs Your CertainTeed Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking in a stair-step pattern along the backsplash. This usually means the wallboard behind it is flexing or swelling. CertainTeed M2Tech board resists moisture, but if it was installed over a stud that’s shifted, or if the previous crew skipped the seam tape, the tile movement will show it.
- A musty smell that won’t leave, even after cleaning under the sink. That odor usually points to moisture in the wall cavity, which means the board behind your cabinets is holding water or the insulation against an exterior kitchen wall has gone damp. In coastal Orange County towns like Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, we see this after a few unusually wet winters.
- Visible staining or a slight bulge at the drywall seams near the sink or dishwasher. That’s a sign the original board wasn’t moisture-rated, or the CertainTeed board was installed with standard joint compound instead of a setting-type compound. Water finds the seam, and the seam lets go.
- Cabinet doors that stick or rub in summer but close fine in winter. Orange County’s inland areas swing from dry heat to damp marine layer. Cheap wallboard behind cabinet hang points expands and contracts, and the cabinets move with it. We’ve seen this in Fullerton, Anaheim, and Orange more times than we can count.
- Siding on an exterior kitchen wall that’s cupping or pulling away at the corners. If CertainTeed siding was used where the kitchen meets an exterior wall, and the flashing wasn’t re-done during the remodel, water runs behind it and works into the kitchen framing. You’ll see it as cracked drywall inside first.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Orange County, a kitchen remodel that includes specifying or correcting CertainTeed materials runs $14,000 to $45,000. Where you fall depends on three things: the size of the kitchen, whether we’re doing a full gut or a surface update, and the cabinet and countertop lines you choose. A smaller kitchen with refaced cabinets and a new backsplash might land around $14,000 to $20,000. A full kitchen with KraftMaid or Wellborn cabinetry, a kitchen island, and Cambria or Silestone countertops will push toward the top of that range.
| Scope | Orange County Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full kitchen remodel with CertainTeed M2Tech board, mid-range cabinets and counters | $18,000 – $35,000 |
| Smaller kitchen remodel (galley or condo kitchen) | $14,000 – $20,000 |
| Cabinet installation (KraftMaid or Wellborn) | $4,000 – $13,000 |
| Countertop installation (Cambria, Silestone, or Caesarstone) | $2,000 – $6,500 |
| Backsplash installation, including substrate correction | $800 – $2,500 |
| Kitchen island addition | $3,000 – $10,000 |
Every number we give is written, not verbal. The price on day one is the price on the final invoice unless you change the scope. We also carry the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on every Orange County kitchen remodel we do.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can check yourself: pull a drawer and look for water staining under the sink, run your hand along drywall seams near the dishwasher, and look for any gaps where exterior siding meets the kitchen wall. That’s useful information to have before you call anyone.
But if the substrate behind your backsplash or around your sink has failed, this is not a weekend fix. Cutting out failed wallboard means shutting off water lines, pulling cabinets or tile, and knowing exactly what’s behind the wall so you don’t hit a wire or a vent. We’ve had Orange County homeowners start this job themselves and call us mid-way when they found mold, shifted framing, or plumbing that had to be moved. By then, the fix costs more than it would have on day one. If you suspect water or wallboard failure in your kitchen, call us at (424) 541-1701 and we’ll take a look before you open anything up.
FAQs

CertainTeed M2Tech moisture-resistant board lasts 25 years or more when installed correctly in an Orange County kitchen. The failure we see is rarely the material itself. It’s the installation around it: skipped seam tape, the wrong joint compound, or the board being used in a place it was never spec’d for. Done right, you’ll replace the tile and cabinets before the board fails.
Sometimes, but not usually. If the tile is intact and the issue is a single cracked grout line, a repair makes sense. If the wallboard behind the tile is swollen or soft, patching it without removing the tile leaves the problem inside the wall, and you’ll be looking at it again in a year. We’ll tell you straight if a repair is worth your money. Call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll assess it during a free estimate.
A full Orange County kitchen remodel with substrate correction, new cabinets, countertops, and backsplash typically takes four to eight weeks. The substrate work itself, pulling failed board and hanging new CertainTeed M2Tech board, happens in the first week. We give you a written schedule and a real arrival window before we start, and we keep the job site clean while we work.
We source CertainTeed board and insulation through our local Orange County suppliers, and we also work directly with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for cabinetry and countertops. You won’t need to order anything yourself. Part of the written price includes material procurement, so you’re not chasing down backordered board or waiting on a countertop slab that never shows.
If you have a CertainTeed kitchen that’s failing, or you’re planning a remodel and want the materials specified properly, call us at (424) 541-1701.
