PGT Fence Installation: The Orange County Owner’s Guide

PGT fence installation in Orange County typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full perimeter install, with most residential jobs landing between $4,500 and $7,200 depending on footage, gate count, and the PGT product line you’re working with. We stock PGT-compatible fence sections, posts, gates, and hardware, and we can usually have a crew on-site within a week of your written estimate. Most Orange County homeowners call us after a Santa Ana wind event snaps a post at the concrete line, or after years of coastal moisture in places like Huntington Beach or Newport Beach have eaten through standard steel hardware that should have been upgraded at install.

Call (424) 541-1701

What usually happens is this: a gate starts dragging, a post leans past the point of shimming, or a section of pickets pulls away from the rail after a hard wind. You check the fence line, find the damage, and then spend an hour trying to figure out if the part is still available, if it’ll match, and whether you’re supposed to call the fence company, a handyman, or the manufacturer. That’s exactly the problem this page is built to solve.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT has shifted its fence and railing catalog over the years, and the big compatibility gotcha in Orange County is this: older PGT aluminum fence lines used 2″ x 2″ posts with a proprietary bracket system, while newer PGT lines run 2.5″ x 2.5″ posts with a different wall thickness and inset rail design. The brackets do not swap between the two. If you’re shopping replacement parts online and see a “universal PGT bracket,” be careful: it may fit a post, but it won’t sit the rail at the original height, which means your picket spacing looks wrong at the gate transition.

The simplest way to identify what you have: look for a PGT label or stamp on the inside face of a gate post or on the bottom rail of the gate itself. The series number (PGT-500, PGT-600, or similar) is usually stamped into the rail end cap. Measure the post before you order anything. That one measurement saves more Orange County homeowners from buying the wrong part than any other single step, and it’s the first thing we check when we come out to quote.

On OEM versus aftermarket: for PGT aluminum fencing, we recommend OEM posts and gate frames in coastal zones like Seal Beach, Costa Mesa, and Laguna Niguel because the factory powder coat is noticeably thicker than most import equivalents. That salt air will find bare aluminum fast. For interior hardware (hinges, latches, tension bands), quality aftermarket stainless or powder-coated steel parts work fine and often outlast the original. Penhallow Remodeling Orange County is an independent service provider and not affiliated with PGT; we source from trade suppliers and can order OEM parts directly when the job calls for it.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

  • A gate that scrapes the ground or won’t close square. This is almost always a hinge plate that’s loosened in the post or a post that’s shifted out of plumb. The fix is usually hinge replacement and post resetting, not a new gate, but homeowners often ignore it until the hinge rips out entirely. Don’t wait on this one.
  • A post that leans but the concrete base looks intact. In Orange County’s clay-heavy soil zones like Irvine and Tustin, soil expands and contracts with rain, which slowly works posts loose from the concrete. The post itself is usually fine; it needs to be pulled, re-set, and re-shimmed. Patching the concrete around it won’t hold.
  • White chalky corrosion at the post base or rail ends. This is galvanic corrosion from un-coated steel hardware meeting aluminum in a moisture zone. Within ten miles of the coast, this shows up in five to eight years; inland, it takes longer. Once the chalk starts, the hardware is on borrowed time.
  • Pickets that rattle or bow out of line. Loose rail screws or failed tension clips are the usual culprits. In older PGT lines, the thin metal clip that holds the picket to the rail fatigues and snaps. You’ll see pickets leaning at slightly different angles. It’s a nuisance now, but it reduces the fence’s wind rating, which matters during Santa Ana season.
  • Gate latch that needs to be lifted or jiggled to engage. The latch and strike plate have moved out of alignment, usually because the gate post has drifted slightly. Adjusting the latch buys you time; resetting the post fixes it. Tustin and Anaheim Hills homeowners see this frequently on side-yard gates that get heavy daily use.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A whole-home remodel with the living, dining and kitchen areas opened up

A full PGT fence installation in Orange County runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a standard residential lot, and the spread comes down to three things: linear footage, the number of gates, and whether existing posts can be reused or need fresh concrete. A typical 150-foot side-and-backyard fence with two gates lands around $5,200 to $6,800 in our market. If your job is just gate replacement or a section repair, we quote it as its own smaller line item, usually $600 to $1,800, not as a full-fence price.

  • Site preparation and disposal: $300 – $700 (removing old posts, hauling debris)
  • PGT aluminum fence materials (mid-line series): $28 – $42 per linear foot
  • Posts and concrete setting (new line): $70 – $120 per post, depending on depth and soil
  • Gate fabrication and hang (single walk gate): $350 – $650 each
  • Demo and disposal of failed sections: included with most full-line quotes

Every quote is written, not verbal. You’ll see the parts number, the labor, the disposal fee, and the exact price before we pick up a tool. That’s the Kingswell standard we work under: the number on the estimate is the number on the invoice, and any change gets its own written line before we proceed. The work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if a post shifts or a gate misaligns within the year, we come back and fix it at no charge, no second-visit fee, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can diagnose the problem yourself: walk the fence line, mark the posts that have moved, test every gate, and take photos of any labels or stamps so the quote is precise. That kind of homework saves time and usually tells us 80% of what we need before we arrive. A leaning post, a dragging gate, or a snapped picket clip is something you should be able to identify on a Saturday morning.

The dangerous part comes when owners try to pull a leaning post with a come-along tied to a tree, or start cutting rails without understanding where the tension sits in the fence line. PGT aluminum sections are light, but a post under load can kick when the last bracket releases. We’ve seen two Orange County homeowners in the last few years get hurt exactly that way: one cracked a wrist, one got a face full of aluminum rail when the section sprang. If the post is leaning, call us. If the gate hinge has torn out of the post, call us. If it’s a loose picket or a latch adjustment, that’s reasonable DIY territory. For anything structural, call (424) 541-1701 and we’ll give you the number first, then pick up the tool.
